The first time I was able to see someone in a gorilla costume was at a rodeo, being ridden by an actor who performed "monster performances." He would do magical tricks, and later "unleash" an enormous gorilla, Frankenstein monster or mummy to scare the spectators. The name he used was Morris, and he had constructed unique, highly real-looking costumes that he promoted in magazines that focused on show business. Roger Patterson used a Morris costume in his 1967 Bigfoot videotape.

Men wearing gorilla suits have been a part of movie-making since the earliest times of sound filming. Charles Gemora, Ray "Crash" and Ray "Crash" Corrigan were the two actors who played all gorillas on screen until the 1940s in the beginning. The costumes were worn by both actors in a variety of serials and film features. Both of them adapted their costumes when science fiction films started to become popular. Gemora appeared in War of the Worlds while Corrigan was seen in It, The Terror from Beyond Space.
